Revision branches"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is it?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you&#8217;re familiar with <a href=\"https:\/\/hub.xdinnovation.eu\/knowledge\/r%C3%A9visions-dans-solidworks-3dexperience\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revisions<\/a>, you may be wondering what revision branches are. Let&#8217;s simplify things: they&#8217;re a <strong>copy of your original file,<\/strong> as if you&#8217;d &#8220;saved it as new&#8221;. But they offer more possibilities than a simple copied file.  <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Application 1: Design exploration<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The best use of revision branches is in design exploration &#8211; let&#8217;s say you need to design a wheel. You have a first design, but you want to test different versions. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Don&#8217;t use &#8220;save as new&#8221;<\/strong> or &#8220;save as&#8221; under a new name! Use Branches instead &#8211; this creates a <strong>new file, with a new name<\/strong>, and allows you to close the branch afterwards. Changes made to this new branch will have no effect on the original project.  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"commands\" class=\"hs-image-align-center\" height=\"197\" style=\"width: 688px; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/8764694.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net\/hubfs\/8764694\/commands.png\" width=\"688\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Step 1: Create a new branch<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You can create a new branch from SOLIDWORKS or from your bookmarks. Let&#8217;s try different designs of a wheel used in an assembly: <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Create branch\" class=\"hs-image-align-center\" height=\"371\" style=\"width: 688px; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/8764694.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net\/hubfs\/8764694\/Create%20branch.gif\" width=\"688\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"hs-callout-type-tip\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-hs-callout-type=\"tip\">\n<p>Best practice: a branch is a copy. It must have a <strong>different name than<\/strong> the original file! <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To find the branch you&#8217;ve just created, use &#8220;replace with revision&#8221; or the search bar :<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"replace by revision\" class=\"hs-image-align-center\" height=\"371\" style=\"width: 688px; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/8764694.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net\/hubfs\/8764694\/replace%20by%20revision.gif\" width=\"688\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You can modify the geometry of this branch without affecting the base part. When exploring new concepts, it may be necessary to create several branches: <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"many branches\" class=\"hs-image-align-center\" height=\"251\" style=\"width: 688px; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/8764694.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net\/hubfs\/8764694\/many%20branches.jpg\" width=\"688\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Step 2: Merge the branch<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, one of the iterations is selected. The<strong> &#8220;New Revision From&#8221;<\/strong> command can be used to merge the chosen branch into the original design as a new revision! <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Suppose we want to choose this wheel concept:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"choose design branch\" class=\"hs-image-align-center\" height=\"322\" style=\"width: 688px; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/8764694.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net\/hubfs\/8764694\/choose%20design%20branch.png\" width=\"688\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We need to go back to the original part and choose <strong>&#8220;new revision from&#8221;<\/strong> to create revision B of this part. Then we choose the concept we want: <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New revision from\" class=\"hs-image-align-center\" height=\"371\" style=\"width: 688px; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/8764694.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net\/hubfs\/8764694\/New%20revision%20from.gif\" width=\"688\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"hs-callout-type-tip\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-hs-callout-type=\"tip\">\n<p>Note: the file retains its original title (&#8220;rear wheel&#8221;), but a new revision is created.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"same title\" class=\"hs-image-align-none\" height=\"389\" style=\"width: 688px; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/8764694.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net\/hubfs\/8764694\/same%20title.png\" width=\"688\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Step 3: replace in the assembly<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now, every assembly using the original part detects the existence of a new version:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Not latest revision\" class=\"hs-image-align-center\" height=\"311\" style=\"width: 517px; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/8764694.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net\/hubfs\/8764694\/Not%20latest%20revision.png\" width=\"517\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You can easily replace it with the new geometry:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Update revision in asm\" class=\"hs-image-align-center\" height=\"371\" style=\"width: 688px; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/8764694.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net\/hubfs\/8764694\/Update%20revision%20in%20asm.gif\" width=\"688\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">No need to send a message to your colleagues to get them to work with the latest version.<\/p>\n<div class=\"hs-callout-type-note\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-hs-callout-type=\"note\">\n<p>Note: you can also use branches for <strong>assemblies or sub-assemblies<\/strong>! But merging the branch may prove trickier.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"branch on assemblies\" class=\"hs-image-align-none\" height=\"266\" style=\"width: 688px; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/8764694.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net\/hubfs\/8764694\/branch%20on%20assemblies.jpg\" width=\"688\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-v-9aeb1ff5=\"\" data-media-type=\"picture\" data-position=\"center\" data-size=\"large\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-v-9aeb1ff5=\"\" data-media-type=\"picture\" data-position=\"center\" data-size=\"large\">\n<div data-v-9aeb1ff5=\"\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Use 2: Product family<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sometimes, product design evolves in a non-linear way, with each iteration becoming a unique branch that may be similar to but different from the original idea. For example, a hammer can be used as the basis for a collection of various hand tools. <\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-v-9aeb1ff5=\"\" data-media-type=\"picture\">\n<div data-v-9aeb1ff5=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"hs-image-align-center\" height=\"496\" style=\"width: 221px; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/dspart005-eu1-partners-3dswym.3dexperience.3ds.com\/api\/media\/streammedia\/id\/BsoXa0fmS0OvxB8AXfWkoQ\/type\/picture\/key\/o1\/update\/d74b028587097bef3ec5d2c2142a50ac\" width=\"221\" loading=\"lazy\" data-v-9aeb1ff5=\"\" data-media-id=\"BsoXa0fmS0OvxB8AXfWkoQ\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But there are dozens of specialized hammer types and other hand tools, such as hatchets and axes, that may have evolved from the first hammer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"hs-image-align-center\" height=\"371\" style=\"width: 688px; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/8764694.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net\/hubfs\/8764694\/hammer%20gif-gif.gif\" width=\"688\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All these products feature similar elements that are repeated from one model to the next. This is where the <strong>New Branch<\/strong> command comes in.
